Rob Neyer, Baseball Writer & Commissioner

My name is Rob Neyer, and I’ve been writing about sports for 35 years. From 1996 through 2010, I wrote more words for ESPN than anyone (while also publishing six books about baseball). Since then, I’ve been an editor, columnist, blogger, and podcaster at Vox Media and Fox Sports, and written freelance stories for Yahoo Sports, FiveThirtyEight, and (especially) The New York Times, among others.

In 2018, my seventh book – Powerball: Anatomy of a Modern Baseball Game – was named winner of the prestigious CASEY Award, given annually to the year’s best baseball book. In 2022, I collaborated with longtime Major League Baseball umpire Dale Scott on his lauded autobiography, The Umpire is Out: Calling the Game and Living My True Self, which the Times described as “rollicking.” As of late, I’m writing regularly on Substack.

Until recently, I hosted SABR’s weekly podcast for 250 episodes, and I’ve now served as Commissioner of the West Coast League – the premier summer collegiate baseball league in western North America – since 2018.
